"Bankei: "Praying for world piece and your own egoistic wishes will just lead to more egoism and arrogance. I too am now tired of praying for my soul's salvation, just wandering around calmly, letting my breath come and go."
"Good, you say, means doing good, but bad is indeed the mind that thinks this!
Roll good and bad equally into a ball, wrap it in paper and throw it away - forget it!"
"THE ZEN TEACHING OF HUANG PO
Therefore does the sutra say: ‘Develop a mind which rests on no thing
whatever.’
Every one of the sentient beings bound to the wheel of
alternating life and death is re-created from the karma of
his own desires! Endlessly their hearts remain bound to the
six states of existence, thereby involving them in all sorts
of sorrow and pain. Ch‘ing Ming! says: “There are people
with minds like those of apes who are very hard to teach;
people who need all sorts of precepts and doctrines with
which to force their hearts into submission.’ And so when
thoughts arise, all sorts of dharmas? follow, but they vanish
with thought’s cessation. We can see from this that every
sort of dharma is but a creation of Mind. And all kinds of
beings—humans, devas, sufferers in hell, asuras and all
comprised within the six forms of life—each one of them is
Mind-created. If only you would learn how to achieve a
state of non-intellection, immediately the chain of causation would snap."
"As to performing the six pāramitās and vast numbers of similar practices, or gaining merits as countless as the sands of the Ganges, since you are fundamentally complete in every respect, you should not try to supplement that perfection by such meaningless practices. When there is occasion for them, perform them; and, when the occasion is passed, remain quiescent. If you are not absolutely convinced that the Mind is the Buddha, and if you are attached to forms, practices and meritorious performances, your way of thinking is false and quite incompatible with the Way. - Huangpo"
"You say, ‘The six pāramitās and the ten thousand [virtuous] actions are all to be practiced.’ As I see it, all this is just making karma. Seeking buddha and seeking dharma is only making hell-karma. Seeking bodhisattvahood is also making karma; reading the sutras and studying the teachings are also making karma. Buddhas and patriarchs are people with nothing to do. - Linji"
"That's why it's so important for you to understand about your Buddha-mind. Once you have, even without performing a lot of religious disciplines, you're Unborn that very day. If the Buddha-mind is clearly realized, that's enough. You need not do nothing else - no practice, no precepts, no zazen or koan study. Nothing like that. You'll be free from care, everything will be taken care of, just by being as you are. ~ Bankei"
